Countdown!
Well, a week today I'll be setting off for London, then down to Penzance and on to Land's End...before heading North, going via the Severn Bridge, Manchester, Edinburgh, Inverness and finally John o'Groats..., arriving on 22nd September.
I'm starting to feel apprehensive about the trip and really looking forward to being underway. The stakes are getting a bit higher - thanks to everyone's generosity we have now had £11, 200 pledged - so each mile really matters! I've started wondering about what could go wrong: what I'll do if my bike gets stoled (I do have a number of locks, including locks to keep the panniers on!); or what if I get really wet at the start of a day's cycling and can't get warm and dry to recharge my batteries?; or what if I suffer with my back as a result of a soft bed?; or get really lost? (I'm bound to sometimes, especially as country lanes can be hard to navigate, but I will have a compass with me). I really want to complete the whole journey...
So, I'm planning a week of final preparations. My bike has had a full service (many thanks to Michael's Cycle shop in Beccles who serviced the bike without charge). I'm sorting through luggage to see what I can take that fits in the panniers and doesn't weigh too much. We're putting up a big map in St Michael's Church, Beccles so people can track my progress, and I'm starting to write a more detailed journal of preparations (and will continue this for the duration of my trip).

Peter, well done on the amount pledged! We’ll look in on the blog before we leave Sydney and as we travel across the US. Are you going to/have the ability to, post any photos to this blog as you go along? All the best for the trip, our thoughts are with you. – Brian and Jill Langford, Sydney.

CONGRATULATIONS! on your magnificent feat. What else is there to say, we have been watching your progress with admiration and awe.
Another group in today, so the gutters are very much required!
Looking forward to seeing you back home.
All the best for the last (few?) miles.
